The soul would have no rainbow had the eyes no tears. It may be that our role on this planet is not to worship God--but to create him. There are two types of people--those who come into a room and say, "Well, here I am!" and those who come in and say, "Ah, there you are. Fatherhood is pretending the present you love most is soap-on-a-rope. Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home. The test of a first-fate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in mind at the same time and still retain the ability to function. I could prove God statistically. The good man is the friend of all living things. Delusions of grandeur make me feel a lot better about myself. An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind. The only tyrant I accept in this world is the still voice within. A coward is incapable of exhibiting love; it is the prerogative of the brave. Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes. If the aborigine drafted an IQ test, all of Western civilization would presumably flunk it. Live as you will have wished to have lived when you are dying. Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it. Whoever controls the media--the images--controls the culture. Anyone who goes to a psychiatrist ought to have his head examined. The illusion that times that were are better than those that are, has probably pervaded all ages. As you journey through life take a minute every now and then to give a thought for the other fellow. He could be plotting something. We do not inherit this land from our ancestors; we borrow it from our children. It is my supposition that the Universe in not only queerer than we imagine, is queerer than we CAN imagine. My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all. We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special. |
