Some people are born mediocre, some people achieve mediocrity, and some people have mediocrity thrust upon them. Courage is grace under pressure. But did thee feel the earth move? Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know. The beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand. It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves. We seem to have a compulsion these days to bury time capsules in order to give those people living in the next century or so some idea of what we are like. I have prepared one of my own. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder, and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like. Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored. From the moment I picked up your book until I laid it down, I was convulsed with laughter. Some day I intend reading it. To achieve the impossible dream, try going to sleep. Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for going backwards. Consistency is contrary to nature, contrary to life. The only completely consistent people are dead. Great ideas need landing gear as well as wings. We was robbed! It is always the best policy to tell the truth, unless, of course, you are an exceptionally good liar. Always and never are two words you should always remember never to use. The most efficient labor-saving device is still money. All marriages are mixed marriages. Mistakes are the portals of discovery. Religion is a defense against the experience of God. Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves. The pendulum of the mind alternates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong. The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die. If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich. And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. In the long run, we are all dead. Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. Hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. Hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. Hatred darkens life; love illuminates it. Life is too short for traffic. The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in determination. All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible. Human beings are seventy percent water, and with some the rest is collagen. Turn on, tune in and drop out. There are three side effects of acid. Enchanced long term memory, decreased short term memory, and I forget the third. Power corrupts. Absolute power is kind of neat. All we are saying is give peace a chance. Life is what happens while you are making other plans. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket--safe, dark, motionless, airless--it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable. Every generation thinks it has the answers, and every generation is humbled by nature. Where facts are few, experts are many. I have noticed that the people who are late are often so much jollier than the people who have to wait for them. The medium is the message. The new electronic interdependence recreates the world in the image of a global village. Ambition is a poor excuse for not having sense enough to be lazy. Practical people would be more practical if they would take a little more time for dreaming. |
