Good art however immoral is wholly a thing of virtue. Good art can NOT be immoral. By good art I mean art that bears true witness, I mean the art that is most precise. There is in fact no such thing as art for art's sake, art that stands above classes, art that is detached from or independent of politics. Proletarian literature and art are part of the whole proletarian revolutionary cause. Being good in business is the most fascinating kind of art. Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art. Classic art was the art of necessity: modern romantic art bears the stamp of caprice and chance. I believe entertainment can aspire to be art, and can become art, but if you set out to make art you're an idiot. The art of pleasing is the art of deception. To say the word Romanticism is to say modern art -- that is, intimacy, spirituality, color, aspiration towards the infinite, expressed by every means available to the arts. Besides the noble art of getting things done, there is the noble art of leaving things undone. The wisdom of life lies in eliminating the non-essentials. The art of acceptance is the art of making someone who has just done you a small favor wish that he might have done you a greater one. It is commonly supposed that the art of pleasing is a wonderful aid in the pursuit of fortune; but the art of being bored is infinitely more successful. The cinema is not an art which films life: the cinema is something between art and life. Unlike painting and literature, the cinema both gives to life and takes from it, and I try to render this concept in my films.
